Blower Door Testing in Adelaide

At Passive House Adelaide, we provide our clients with airtigthness consultancy and blower door testing services in Adelaide. If you want to have an energy-efficient house, then blower door testing is a must. A blower door is a diagnostic tool used to measure the airtightness of buildings. It measures how much air filters out of your house. Blower door testing measures the leakiness of the building fabric as a whole and determines whether the building fabric is reasonably airtight. You need to understand that up to 30% of space heating and cooling load are due to air infiltration, which is dependent on air leakage of the building envelope. Having a leaky house means it will cost a lot to heat and cool it. If you have an airtight house, your energy bills will be much lower. Measuring and proving whether your house is built airtight, and locating unwanted air leakage is what we can do for you by conducting a blower door test.

Blower Door Test for Measuring the Airtightness of a Building

A blower door is used to measure the airtightness of buildings. Whether you have an old draughty building or an energy-efficient house, blower door testing in Adelaide can measure airtightness and find unnecessary air leakages in the building envelope. Building your house to a high level of airtightness is crucial to the performance of the building. An airtightness strategy should be an integral part of energy efficient and high performance house design.

Most important reasons for establishing airtightness are:

  • To prevent moisture condensation problems
  • To prevent uncomfortable drafts caused by hot or cold air leaking in from the outdoors
  • For reducing energy consumption due to air leakage

Air leakage in the building envelope leads to air infiltration. Even the smallest leakages in the building envelope and lack of proper insulation can allow damp and warm indoor air to escape. Therefore, it is a waste of energy if the air that you are cooling or heating escapes. Conducting a blower door test is the best way to verify that the airtightness targets have been achieved.

At Passive House Adelaide, we conduct blower door testing and air leakage testing on domestic and commercial buildings. We focus on helping our clients achieve higher energy efficiency by identifying air leakage issues in their premises, and recommending the right remedial actions to make the building airtight. Our experts will measure airtightness and test air leakage in your building by using a combination of thermal imaging and blower door testing. We will provide you with a detailed report that will focus on the areas that need attention. Our experts will also determine the best remedial solutions for improving your building’s energy efficiency, performance levels and comfort.

How Blower Door Testing Works

Blower door testing is done to measure airtightness of a house or building and detect air leakages in the building envelope. The main components of a blower door testing unit includes a door panel system, a calibrated fan for measuring airflow rate and a cutting-edge pressure-sensing gadget that calculates the air pressure created by the fan flow. The blower door unit is mounted into the frame of one of the external doors to test the leakiness of the building.

Airtightness of a house is measured by generating a gentle vacuum in the house through the blower door fan. The fan pulls air out of the house which results in lower air pressure within the house. This creates a pressure difference between inside and outside. Higher outside pressure rushes in through any gaps, holes or unsealed openings and cracks in the building enclosure. The air flowing into the house is measured and calculated with the help of the gauges on the panel of the blower door. The blower door test finds out the actual air infiltration rate of the house or building, which is measured by keeping the building-to-outside pressure difference at 50 Pascal. The less airtight the house the more air is needed from the blower door fan to create a change in building pressure.

It is then possible to find where air leakage is occurring. We use diagnostic tools such as a thermal imaging camera and a professional hand-held smoke pencil to find the air leakage points in the building envelope. The information gathered and the recorded images are compiled and a detailed report is provided to the client/building owner. We identify the problem areas and determine the best possible solutions. The report highlights the specific areas that require sealing or remediation to make the building more airtight.

Benefits of Blower Door Tests

If you want to make your house more energy efficient, then getting a blower door test done is an absolute necessity. Blower door testing is done to quantify the air leakage in your home and measure the overall airtightness of the building. This can help you take the necessary actions to make your house more comfortable and energy efficient. Blower door tests are done on newly constructed homes to meet “Green” conservation standards.

Here are some of the most important benefits of doing a blower door test:

  • Reduces your carbon footprint
  • Discovers air leaks, drafts or lack of proper insulation
  • Improves your indoor air quality
  • Makes your home more energy efficient
  • Saves you money on your utility bill
  • Increases the lifespan and efficiency of your heating and cooling system
  • Increases the value of your home
